Question 17297 – NTA UGC NET Dec 2023 Paper-1

A milkman buys 20 liters of milk from a dairy at the cost of Rs.50 per liter. He also purchases some mineral water at the rate of Rs 20 per liter and adds it to the milk. He then sells the adulterated milk at the rate of Rs. 60 per liter and makes a profit of Rs. 400. What is the amount of water he added to the milk?

Correct Answer: C

Question 7 Explanation:
Cost Price (CP) of 20 litres of milk = 20×Rs.50=Rs.1000
Let’s assume the milkman adds x liters of mineral water.
Cost Price (CP) of x liters of mineral water = x×Rs.20=Rs.20x
The total cost of the adulterated milk (milk + water) is Rs.1000+Rs.20x
Selling Price (SP) of the adulterated milk = 60×(20+x)
Profit = SP – CP
400=60×(20+x)−(1000+20x)400
Now, solve for x:
400=1200+60x−1000−20x
Combine like terms:
400=200+40x
Subtract 200 from both sides:
200=40x
Divide by 40:
x=5
A
10 liter
B
8 liter
